12 Facts About Farting You Probably Didn’t Know

Are burping, farting, hiccupping, slurping considered as embarrassing and rude? Or quite acceptable in public? I guess it depends on the country where you perform these body functions.

Slurping is not considered polite in all Asian cultures. In Thailand and in parts of China it is accepted to slurp but not really encouraged.

India, Turkey and some Middle Eastern countries and even in parts of China it is considered good manners to burp after a meal. It’s a sign of appreciation and satiety.

It turns out that farting after a meal is an expression of thanks and appreciation to the Inuit people of Canada. An Indian tribe in South America called the Yanomami fart as a greeting.

I did a research by myself about farting since I heard that farting was NOT considered rude in some cultures but I wasn’t really sure.

Flatulence as it is defined in the medical literature is “flatus expelled through the anus” or the “quality or state of being flatulent”. The root comes from the Latin flatus“a blowing, a breaking wind”. The scientific study of this area of medicine is termed flatology.

Non-medical definitions of the term include “the uncomfortable condition of having gas in the stomach and bowels”, or “a state of excessive gas in the alimentary canal”.

Colloquially, flatulence may be referred to as “farting”, “trumping”, “tooting”, “passing gas”, “breaking wind” or simply (in American English) “gas” or (British English) “wind”.

Why do we fart?

  • The bacteria in our intestines create gases as they breakdown sugars and starches that your body can’t easily digest.
  • The bacteria breakdown process produces roughly between 2 and 6 cups of gas a day, and after it builds up, it needs to come out somewhere.
  • Regular farting is a sign that you’re consuming enough fiber, and have a healthy collection of bacteria in your intestines.

Anyway, what do you know about farting, except that it sounds and smells funny, and is produced by your butt?!
