List Of 10 Countries That CIA Have Used Secret Armies

1. Cuba

This is the best known CIA secret army. When Fidel Castro’s government took power, he took steps to reduce American influence on the island. He nationalized American-dominated companies such as sugar and mining, and he introduces land reforms calling on other Latin American governments to act with more autonomy. Because of this, the US government led by President Eisenhower gave an authorization to the CIA to recruit 1,400 Cuban exiles, and begin training them to overthrow Castro. Even though the army was strong, Castro’s forces were stronger. The attack know as the Bay of Pigs invasion was over within 24 hours. 2. El Salvador

The US government supported the government of El Salvador that was faced opposition from communist rebels. The CIA plan was to establish death squads, trained, pro-government forces that will massacre villages. This led to dislocation of over a million people. Right after the truce, Salvadoran government signed a general amnesty for people involved in war crimes. Even though this amnesty was ruled as illegal, it remained in effect. People who were seeking justice never got it, while the confidential files that hold evidence of CIA involvement during Salvadorian civil war have disappeared from human rights group in Washington. 3. Afghanistan

The CIA forces armed and trained the Muhaheddin fighters through Operation Cyclone that was carried out to stop the Soviet invasion. Later on, many fighters form the core of the fundamentalist Islamic terrorist groups. One of these fighters was Osama bin Laden. YES! The one and only, Osama bin Laden, was trained by the CIA itself. But, was he alone? American officials estimated that 12,500 foreigners were trained in bomb-making, sabotage, and urban guerrilla warfare in Afghan camps that CIA set up.

4. Guatemala

Everyone have heard of ‘Banana Republic’, right? Well, CIA is responsible for the name. How all started? Guatemala’s President Jacobo Arbenz tried to establish agrarian reforms that would hand over uncultivated land to peasants, thereby creating a middle class in his country where only 2% of the population owned 72% of the land. BUT, most of the land was owned by United Fruit Company, the American monopoly that was the most powerful body in the state. Even though, President Arbenz wanted to compensate the company for its losses, the CIA overthrew the government and triggered a war. A war over bananas.

5. Congo

Belgium was ending its colonial rule over Congo in the 1960s. But, both powerful opponents, Soviet Union and the US were keeping a close eye on the mineral-rich country. After gaining an independence under the leadership of Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba, Congo’s troops rebelled against their white officer corps and started terrorizing the European population. As a response, Belgium send forces to reoccupy the country. What did CIA do? The CIA staged assassinations (one on the Prime Minister Lumumba), armed rebel forces, and even backed them up with a secret air force.

6. Nicaragua (for the second time)

The leftists Sandinistas took over power in Nicaragua in the 1980s, while CIA sided with the Contra militia that opposed them. The US agency trained this organization well known for child soldiers. Moreover, it provided them with arms, and ran cocaine organization for them. The CIA was part of many massacres and war crimes that we just can’t imagine them.

7. Angola

The CIA signed up French and South African armed forces to help right-wing groups in their fight against the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola. The group was in fight with other organizations that wanted to take over Angola after the Portuguese decolonization. The CIA army lost.

8. Ukraine (for the first time)

The Nazis set up a partisan group in Ukraine to slow down the progress of Soviet forces during the 2nd World War. The CIA began funding and helping the partisan group, but the Soviets put an end to the group in 1952.

 9. Venezuela

A group in Venezuela had an attempt to overthrow the government in 2002. Despite the fact that US intelligence denied its involvement, there are many evidence to hold against the Bush Administration and their plan.

10. Ukraine (for the second time)

The latest revolution in Ukraine started organically, but, it was taken over by the CIA. This was another method of placing a US puppet regime.

Closing Thoughts

US intelligence have been part of many brutal, violent groups to destabilize a foreign country’s government. Only to gain some profit over the lives of innocent. Would CIA stop backing this groups? I don’t think so. It apparently has been doing this for over 60 years, and it’s a never ending process.

What do you think? Feel free to share it with us. Also, do you know another country that CIA had involvement in its destabilization?
